Celebrating English Tourism Week 2018
To celebrate English Tourism Week 2018, we thought we’d take a look back at how the installation of Hanwell’s Environmental Monitoring solutions helped revive the Mary Rose at Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard.
After undertaking a 17-year wax spraying process, designed to protect the ships timbers, the final phase of the project required a five-year drying out period to ensure that the ship remained intact. As part of this final phase, the Mary Rose Trust relied on Hanwell Solutions Ltd to monitor both the condition of the timbers as well as the environment of the storage chamber.
Hanwell Solutions developed a tailor-made monitoring and control system, giving staff regular access to temperature and humidity data from 60 sensors in the chamber. This was an essential feature in order to avoid deterioration of the timbers.
As the only 16th century warship on display in world, the Mary Rose forms a Tudor-era capsule, providing visitors with an insight into 16th century life.
