Temperature & Humidity

Measuring relative humidity for conservation of historical buildings and their collections assist conservators, conservation officers and property managers with reducing the biological activity, and acceleration of chemical deterioration processes.

Hanwell’s data loggers and radio transmitters are well established within the Heritage sector for assisting with managing these issues. The ML4106 and ML4114 radio transmitters provide users with accurate tools to wirelessly monitor temperature and humidity levels together.

Also, by overlaying external and internal temperature and humidity sensor readings (using the ML4109) users can see the relations between the two and determine whether the HVAC systems working as they should and therefore addressing necessary maintenance long before humidity damage occurs.



Light & UV

Our LUX sensor monitors light and UV in historical buildings to prevent damage to valuable collections caused by fading.  In order to reduce and eliminate these issues the first step would be to monitor the light levels in areas where damage must be kept to a minimum.

Our ML4000LUX/UV series data loggers and radio transmitters can record both light and/or UV levels within an area, helping conservators, conservation officers and property managers to ensure the correct levels of light are being monitored and maintained. Measurements taken include the amount of visible light (LUX) the proportion of UV present (µW/lumen) and the UV power (mW/M2).

Insect Pests

Organic materials such as paper, leather, woods and textiles

A common problem (often resulting from dust build up) is an infestation of insect pests within wood, textiles and other furnishings.  In the past, historical buildings have relied on expensive toxic fumigation to eliminate insect pests in and around infested areas. These methods kill insect pests, but leave harmful gases or residues on the surface of items which can be just as damaging.

The Hanwell AnoxiBug system is a cost-effective anoxia treatment that staff can use with ease when an infestation occurs.



Airflow & Wind

Hallways, stairwells and other wind traps close to exits or even open areas

The external corrosion on historical buildings caused by the wind force of rain, pollutants and debris can have detrimental effects on the condition of the external building walls, potentially leading to internal damp and potential mould growth.

Whilst the Hanwell Air flow series can be used internally, the RL2000 can also be used on the same system for external wind speed and direction measuring wind, speed, precipitation, barometric pressure, temperature and humidity.

Monitoring parameters within critical areas like these can prevent further damage and assist with preservation processes.
